The Crocker is planning a 100,000-square-foot expansion, which will triple the current size of the Museum. The new wing, designed by Gwathmey Siegel & Associates, will be on the west side of the existing buildings.

Highlights of the new state-of-the-art Museum building include:

  • Three times the current space for the permanent collection
  • Four times the current space for temporary exhibitions
  • 300-seat auditorium/lecture theatre
  • Café with indoor and open-air seating in the courtyard
  • Double the current number of parking spaces
  • Expanded Museum Store
  • Increased accessibility
  • 7,000-square-foot courtyard plus public access to the current courtyard
  • Loading dock, freight elevator and increased onsite storage space

The expansion will enrich the institution by providing dedicated programming and exhibition spaces allowing greater flexibility in the Museum’s offerings to the public. With the support of Museum members and the community, the Crocker will be a world-class art Museum, befitting a world-class city.

Architectural Plans
The new building will be physically separate from the existing buildings, allowing the historic Crocker Art Gallery to maintain its position as the centerpiece of the complex. The concept of the exterior design is to present the new building as a series of compositions and forms, rather than a singular object. Pitched skylights will create a dynamic roofline and allow for controlled natural light to enter the permanent collection galleries.

The new building will provide a single entry point to the Museum from O Street, adjacent to the existing entrance. A 7,000-square-foot courtyard will extend from the new building’s reception area to the original Art Gallery building, allowing for a subtle transition from “new” to “old.”
