POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Community Art Educator

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Part Time/Non-Exempt
PRIMARY OBJECTIVES:
To implement tours of the Art Ark, the Crocker's mobile museum, for students and teachers in grades K-8 and to host families and teachers participating Art Ark Open Houses and community events. To conduct school-based outreach programs, such as Crocker-to-Go and Artist-to-Go programs and to assist in the implementation of teacher workshops and student exhibitions.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Prepare and conduct age-appropriate interactive tours at school and community sites, to encourage children and youth to appreciate and understand the process of art making and the history of art.
- Assist in evaluating the Art Ark program through written and photographic records. Maintain a log of observations, record statistics of amount of participants, distribute, collect and collate program evaluation surveys.
- Conduct pre-tour orientations, open houses (usually at night) as assigned, and Artist-to-Go and Crocker-to-Go programs; this may include making a presentation and providing information on the technical and thematic aspects of the Art Ark and Museum exhibitions.
- Provide maintenance for current installation, including cleaning and repairing, on an ongoing basis. Help with moves from site to site.
- Aid in monitoring security and safety of the Ark, including operating the wheelchair lift.
- Update Outreach Coordinator on needed supplies on an ongoing basis.
- Attend staff, committee, and community meetings as assigned. Perform related duties and special projects as assigned.
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Teaching experience: Background in conducting art workshops and teaching a range of ages in community and museum settings. Ability to engage children and youth in grades K-8 through an inquiry-based method of investigating artworks.
- Basic to thorough knowledge of studio art and working understanding of art history.
- Multi-Tasking: Ability to be flexible and perform multiple tasks simultaneously, particularly as they relate to coordinating programming at various stages of development and implementation.
- Interpersonal Skills: Ability to work on project teams, and with diverse colleagues, audiences, and artists within the community.
- Professional: Attention to detail; ability to work under deadline; ability to follow through on long and short-term projects.
- Writing Skills: Ability to write in clear and concise prose.
- Public Speaking: Ability to communicate clearly in one-on-one or group situations.
- Computer skills: Ability to use Microsoft Word
REQUIREMENTS
EXPERIENCE: One-year experience in an educational or teaching environment.
EDUCATION: Bachelor degree in Studio Art, Art Education, Art History, or related field.
TRANSPORTATION: Given the outreach focus of this position, it is necessary that the Community Art Educator be able to travel in an expedient fashion to various school and community sites to implement job duties.
SALARY: $10-10.50/ HOUR.
MILEAGE: Mileage beyond a certain distance (and back) is compensated at current IRS rate.
HOURS: 3-4 days/week, 20-25 Hours/week, generally 8 AM - 4 PM; some evenings and weekends required.
