BACKGROUND
The Life-Long Learning division of the Crocker’s Education Department offers adults a wide variety of meaningful and stimulating art-based experiences in a supportive, creative, and social environment of peers. By providing multiple levels of engagement and dialogue that build upon the rich life experiences and an array of interests of life-long learners, these programs expand the knowledge and skills of adults while providing occasions for transformational and emotive learning.  

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE
In accord with the Crocker Art Museum’s Strategic Plan, the Manager of Life-Long Learning develops, plans, implements and supervises dynamic and progressive interpretative programs for the Crocker's adult audiences. The Manager of Life-Long Learning oversees the Crocker’s docents, a distinguished group of more than 100 volunteers who expand and share their knowledge of art with over 17,000 visitors each year. 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Develops and implements a comprehensive long-range interpretation plan for adult education.  This plan will include an active series of gallery talks, lectures, symposiums, multidisciplinary art performances, art history classes, web-based experiences, audio/cell phone tours, written didactic materials, and installed interpretives (for example-- touchable objects, resources spaces, gallery-based hands-on activities, labels, etc.).
  • Oversees the Crocker’s long-standing Docent Council, trains one to two new docent classes per year, and supports active docents by working with the Council to offer engaging continuing education activities.
  • Conducts ongoing evaluation of all adult education offerings to ensure that programs reflect the latest and best practices within the museum field and achieves education outcomes and attendance objectives set by the Department.
  • Works closely with the Director for Education and as part of the Education Team to strengthen all aspects of the Education Department, particularly as it relates to broadening and deepening the Museum’s audience(s).
  • Develops and manages Life-Long Learning’s annual budget and assist in developing new and expanded earned and contributed revenue strategies in regards to adult programming.  This includes assisting with the research and writing of grant proposals, administering contracts, processing program/class registrations, and overseeing grant allocations.
  • Works in conjunction with key museum staff (through internal meetings, project teams, and discussions) to develop programming and community partnerships that reflect and support the Crocker's mission statement and strategic plan. This includes developing and nurturing ties between the Crocker and other arts/educational organizations within the Sacramento area and beyond.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to be a master museum educator, able to direct and lead tours of the Crocker’s permanent collection and special exhibitions.
  • Work on special projects and other duties as assigned.

Please note that these are general areas of responsibilities and duties. A schedule of goals, which are more specific in nature, are developed during the annual Performance Appraisal process.

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-Tasking ─ flexible and able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, particularly as they relate to coordinating programming at various stages of development and implementation.
  • Teaching experience ─ experience conducting training, courses, workshops and teaching a range of ages in both museum, academic, and community-based settings
  • Basic Knowledge ─ thorough knowledge of scholars and artists within the community; program development, budget and implementation; a working understanding of art history, and museum educational theory and practice;
  • Interpersonal Skills ─ ability to lead and work on project(s) teams and within the community.
  • Administrative ─ must be able to keep accurate records and statistics, and have math and budgetary skills.
  • Professional  ─ attention to details; ability to work under deadline; ability to follow through on long and short-term projects.
  • Computer skills ─ ability to use Microsoft Office Word, Microsoft Office Excel, Microsoft Office  Publisher, Microsoft Office Power Point.  Familiarity with FileMaker Pro and Raiser’s Edge are a plus.
  • Writing skills ─ ability to write in clear and concise prose; ability to edit.
  • Public Speaking ─ ability to communicate clearly in one-on-one or group situations, and represent the Museum publicly.

PRIMARY MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Hires and supervises artists, scholars, performers, lecturers, and other presenters.
  • Over see all aspects of the Docent Council as it relates to the Crocker Art Museum.
  • Directly supervises: assigned interns, and a regular crew of volunteers.
  • Maintains direct and ongoing contact with presenters, artists, scholars, performers, lecturers and all those who are involved in Life-Long Learning Programs.
  • Ensures the maintenance of up-to-date program records and mailing lists of current and potential program participants and community partners.
  • Works closely with the Marketing Department to promote public programs.
  • Maintains program files and administrative records.
  • Purchases, orders, and maintains any needed supplies for programming.
  • Prepares program reports for all major program areas. This includes audience data, statistics, and evaluation.
  • Develops and manages Life-Long Learning budget and keeps accurate records of same. Monitors and tracks budget revenues and expenditures staying within annual figures approved by the board.
  • Assists with the development of supplemental program publicity, interpretative materials and program fliers
 REQUIREMENTS

  • EXPERIENCE ─ Minimum of two to three years experience in museum education, adult education, or related art education/programming fields.
  • EDUCATION – Masters Degree in Art History, Museum Education, Art Education, or related field.  Teaching Certifications preferred.
  • SCHEDULE –This is a full-time position, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. 
    Given the nature of the position, evening and weekend hours are regularly assigned.  Must
    be flexible to work a varying schedule.
  • TRANSPORATION – Given the outreach focus on this position, it is key that the Manager of Life-Long Learning be able to travel in an expedient fashion to various school and community sites to implement job duties
