BACKGROUND
The Crocker Art Museum’s school programs, directly and through the professional development of educators, root students in grades K-12 in the history and tradition of the arts, while encouraging students to see their own lives in the stories, themes and practices of art.  As students engage directly with works from the past and present, they develop critical thinking skills by grounding their personal interpretation in the visual evidence of the artwork. Through this process, they build skills in visual analysis and learn to decode and interpret the many visual images in today’s world.  By emphasizing the connection between the visual arts and other disciplines, the Crocker’s school programs strive to infuse the arts into the school curricula and offer multiple entry points to learning. 

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE
In accord with the Crocker’s Mission Statement and Strategic Plan, the Manager, School Programs & Teacher Services, serves as a liaison between the Crocker Art Museum and regional school districts.  He/She works with school administrators, teachers, and the California Department of Education to develop links between the Museum’s permanent collections and temporary exhibitions and school curriculum. 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Develops, plans and implements dynamic and progressive art education programs for the Crocker's school community.  A key component of this is oversight of the tours and museum-based programs conducted for over 14,000 school children each year and working with the Director of Education and the Education Assistant to ensure visits of the highest quality.  This also includes supervision of fundamental programs such as the Art Ark, Crocker-to-Go, Artists-to-Go, student exhibitions, school tours, and professional development activities for teachers and the development of new innovative programs. 
  • Acts as a liaison between museum staff and the education/school community. Coordinates programming, presentations, and advisory committees both on and off-site that effectively introduce the Museum’s collections to schools and teachers and establishes innovative school-museum partnerships.
  • Develops and conducts a series of diverse professional development activities for teachers and administrators that support their knowledge of the Museum’s collections and services as well as instructs them in ways to integrate the arts into the school curriculum. This includes writing and producing written materials for elementary and secondary teachers, such as curriculum resource materials and pre- and post visit activities that make connections between the Museum’s collections and special exhibitions and the school curriculum. 
  • Responsible for supervision and management of the Art Ark program. This includes supervising the Outreach Coordinator and recruiting Community Art Educators for the Art Ark, creating the Art Ark Resource Materials, and occasionally conducting teacher previews and student “tours” of the Ark. 
  • Works with museum staff to select and schedule student exhibitions.  Works with Outreach Coordinator to develop and coordinate the Crocker’s student exhibition schedule. This includes developing themes, objectives, scope, and related programming. 
  • Writes text for the annual school brochure and works with the Crocker’s Marketing Department on the conception and production of the school brochure, quarterly fliers/e-letters for teachers.  With the support of the Marketing Department, coordinates a marketing plan for all school programs and teacher services. 
  • Oversees all the Crocker’s web-based educational resources developed for teachers, in particular Striking Gold: Mining the Resources of the Crocker, a rich interdisciplinary resource for teaching selected K-12 content standards in history, language arts and visual arts, math, and science using artwork in the Crocker’s permanent collection. This includes some uploading of information to website (lesson plans, images, podcast, etc.).
  • Maintains an awareness of the latest research and best practices in art and museum education.  Contribute articles and write-ups to school, district and professional newsletters highlighting the activities of the Crocker’s School Programs & Teacher Services area.
  • Conducts ongoing evaluation of all School Programs & Teacher Services offerings to ensure that programs reflect the latest and best practices within the museum field and achieves education outcomes and attendance objectives set by the Department. To this end, collects all statistics and evaluations related to programming.
  • Works closely with the Director for Education and as part of the Education Team to strengthen all aspects of the Education Department, particularly as it relates to broadening and deepening the Museum’s audience(s).
  • Works closely with the Manager of Life-Long Learning to support the training and continuing education of the Crocker’s docents. This would include leading training sessions for new and existing docents and developing Docent Training Guides and Helpful Touring Hints.
  • Develops and manages School Programs & Teacher Services’ annual budget and assist in developing new and expanded earned and contributed revenue strategies in regards to adult programming.  This includes assisting with the research and writing of grant proposals, administering contracts, and overseeing grant allocations.
  • Works in conjunction with key museum staff (through internal meetings, project teams, and discussions) to develop programming and community partnerships that reflect and support the Crocker's mission statement and strategic plan. This includes developing and nurturing ties between the Crocker and other arts/educational organizations within the Sacramento area and beyond.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to be a master museum educator, able to direct and lead tours of the Crocker’s permanent collection and special exhibitions.
  • Work on special projects and other duties as assigned.

Please note that these are general areas of responsibilities and duties. A schedule of goals, which are more specific in nature, are developed during the annual Performance Appraisal process.

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-Tasking ─ flexible and able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, particularly as they relate to coordinating programming at various stages of development and implementation.
  • Teaching experience ─ experience training adults and teaching a range of ages in both museum, academic, and community-based settings
  • Basic knowledge ─ thorough knowledge of education standards; working understanding of art history, and museum educational theory and practice. 
  • Interpersonal Skills ─ ability to lead and work on projects teams and within the diverse communities
  • Administrative ─ must be able to keep accurate records and statistics, and have math and budgetary skills.
  • Professional ─ attention to details; ability to work under deadline; ability to follow through on long and short-term projects.
  • Computer skills ─ ability to use Microsoft Office Word, Microsoft Office Excel, Microsoft Office  Publisher, Microsoft Office Power Point.  Familiarity with FileMaker Pro and Raiser’s Edge are a plus.
  • Writing skills ─ ability to write in clear and concise prose; ability to edit.
  • Public Speaking ─ ability to communicate clearly in one-on-one or group situations.
  • Exhibition Installation – ability to mat and install student art and create labels

PRIMARY MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Hires and supervise artists, scholars, and other presenters,
    • Supervises directly: the coordinator of the Art Ark, volunteers, assigned interns and artists-in-residence,
    • Ensures that all employment and payroll forms for all staff and program presenters are complete and accurate,
    • Ensures the maintenance of up-to-date mailing lists of current and potential program participants and community partners,
    • Works closely with Communications to promote school/teacher programs,
    • Maintains program files and administrative records,
    • Prepares quarterly and annual reports for all major program areas. This includes keeping the audience data, statistics, and evaluation for Art Ark, Student Exhibitions, School Tours, and Teacher Services.
    • In consultation with the Director of Education, develops the School Programs and Teacher Services budget. Responsible for monitoring that budget to make sure revenues and expenditures stay in on track. Creates final budget report.
    • Monitor and evaluate program budgets, goals, and objectives.  Set priorities and work independently or in a team.  Efficiently organize and manage multiple projects while applying attention to detail.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • EXPERIENCE –Two to three years experience in museum education, curriculum
      development, teaching, and program development or the equivalent.
    • EDUCATION – Masters Degree in Art History, Museum Education, Art Education, or related field.  Teaching Certifications preferred.
    • SCHEDULE –This is a full-time position, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. 
      Given the nature of the position, evening and weekend hours are regularly assigned.  Must
      be flexible to work a varying schedule.
    • TRANSPORATION – Given the outreach focus on this position, it is key that the Manager of School Programs + Teacher Services be able to travel in an expedient fashion to various school and community sites to implement job duties.
