The Crocker Celebrates Black History Month
December 15, 2006 – Sacramento, Calif. – In celebration of Black History Month, the Crocker Art Museum will be presenting several programs highlighting African American art and culture throughout the month of February. In addition, the work of renowned African American artist Betye Saar, who recently received a rave review in the New York Times, will be on display through April 29, 2007.

Special Exhibition: Betye Saar: Extending the Frozen Moment
Incorporating her fascination with photography and its forgotten stories, Betye Saar pieces together poignant works that challenge preconceptions of race and identity in the United States.

Warm your heart and stimulate your mind with a cup of tea while Assistant Curator Diana Daniels takes you through a tour of Betye Saar: Extending the Frozen Moment. Crocker Contemporaries Forum: Art & Identity
A panel of California female artists, including Brenda Louie and Lava Thomas, will discuss how their identity and culture play into their art making and artistic voice. Free to members, $10 nonmembers.
Sunday, February 25, 3 PM
Classical Concert: Susheel Bibbs, Piano & Drum
Soprano and raconteur Susheel Bibbs will present a concert version of Bibbs’ acclaimed one-woman musical, O Freedom, which tells the story of African American Civil Rights Leader Mary Ellen Pleasant in word and song. Free with admission.
The Crocker Art Museum was founded in 1885 and continues as the leading art institution for the California Capital Region and Central Valley. The Museum offers a diverse spectrum of special exhibitions, events and programs to augment its collections of California, European and Asian artworks. The Crocker is located at 216 O Street in downtown Sacramento. Museum hours are 10 AM–5 PM, Tuesday–Sunday; Thursday until 9 PM.
