The volunteer and docent corps of the Crocker Art Museum are essential in ensuring that the Museum meets its mission. We are continually looking for individuals who will help us better serve the community. Crocker volunteers have the unique opportunity to support the arts while learning new skills and meeting people with similar interests. Volunteers play many roles at the Museum, including planning and staffing special events, touring visitors, assisting in the Museum Store and offering administrative support. With 10 primary areas of service at the Crocker, you are sure to find your place within our volunteer ranks. Volunteer Opportunities How to Apply Download a Volunteer Application or contact Stacy Beckley at 916.808.1182 to receive one by mail. Mail your completed application to: Volunteer Program Administrative Volunteer: Help with the behind-the-scenes work that makes the Crocker’s exhibitions and programs possible. Assist our staff with clerical tasks, such as filing, photocopying, typing and bulk mail projects. Volunteers are needed during regular business hours, Mon-Fri 8 AM-5 PM. Concert Volunteer: The Crocker holds Third Thursday Jazz Concerts and Classical Concerts each month. Concert volunteers greet visitors, assist with set-up and clean-up and hand out programs. Duties at jazz concerts may also include selling drink tickets, pouring beverages and staffing a membership table. Docent Program: A Docent is a volunteer guide trained to support visitors as they look and learn about art. The Crocker’s Docent Council is a vital link between visitors and the Museum, reaching approximately 20,000 adults and children annually. Docents commit to touring 44 hours each year and attending monthly lectures, behind-the-scenes tours of new exhibitions and hands-on technique workshops. Museum Store Volunteer: Assist the Store Manager and Sales Associates with daily operations of the Museum Store, including help with merchandise pricing, stocking and cleaning. Volunteers also play a key role in the Crocker’s Annual Holiday Arts and Craft Sale in late November. Special Events Volunteer: Assist with the Crocker’s opening receptions, annual Art Auction held in June and the Crocker Ball held in early December. Volunteers assist with various aspects of event preparation, set-up, clean-up, refreshment service and guest registration, among other duties. Education – Adults Programs Volunteer: Assist with the many adult education programs offered to visitors, including hands-on workshops, Thursday Night Out programs and Tour & Tea. At lectures, films and workshops, volunteers greet and direct guests, handle registration, assist with audio/visual equipment, prepare refreshments and clean-up. Education – Youth & Family Programs Volunteer: Assist with hands-on art activities, festivals and other types of family-focused programs. Volunteers aid in the preparation and clean-up of art activities and support visitors as they experience programs designed to help young people explore the world of art. Enthusiasm and patience is all that is necessary. Library Volunteer: The Gerald Hansen Library, located on the Museum’s ground floor, contains a wealth of books and research materials related to the Crocker’s collection as well as art in general. Help is needed to maintain library materials and to ensure that an accurate inventory of the collection is updated. Photography Volunteer: A great opportunity to help the Museum while building your professional experience and portfolio. All levels of skill are welcome. Opportunities include photographing at special events and programs or documenting special exhibitions and the building. Volunteers provide their own camera equipment and the Museum reimburses development costs. Photographers receive credit when their images are used in promotions for the Museum. Most of the photographs on this website were produced by our fabulous photo volunteers! Community/Visitor Services Volunteer: These volunteers offer general information about the Crocker in a way that makes people excited about the Crocker and all it has to offer. Assignments may include greeting Museum guests at the Front Desk and offering information to enhance their visit, or attending community events to represent the Crocker. A group of volunteers will be recruited to provide information about the Museum and encourage visitation at diverse community functions, like Chalk-It Up, the Sacramento Arts Festival and Run for the Arts. Art Service Group (ASG): Volunteers to the Art Service Group implement a series of programs to raise funds for the Crocker, including The Antiques Show and Sale held in October and Evaluation Days, which take place on a regular basis and provide an informal appraisal for antiques and art objects. A membership fee applies. For more information, contact Pat Gedestad at 916.442.0229. Teen Volunteer For teens ages 16 and older.
