Soft Sculpture: Beyond the Flat Quilt
For 18 +
Saturday & Sunday, January 18 & 19
9:30 AM - 4 PM
Learn how to sculpt an alternate 3-D universe out of fabric, from vines and flower to outrageous animals. We will make a complete three-dimensional landscape by combining our individual class samples to make a collective jungle scene. Explore the use of color, value, and scale to enhance the depth of a piece, as well as learning to create gesture, form, and movement in fabric. Intermediate sewing skills are required.*
Supplies: Bring your own sewing machine with zig-zag capability. If you do not own a machine, call (916) 808-1182 to inquire about borrowing a machine. The Crocker has a limited number of machines available.
Instructor: Susan Else
*You should be familiar with running your sewing machine and have completed at least two simple projects (such as a bag, pillow, baby quilt, or simple garment). This class should not be your first exposure to sewing.
This class is currently full. To have your name added to the waiting list, please call 916.808.1182.
About the Instructor:
Susan Else grew up in a family of artists, but spent the first 20 years of her working life in other fields. She turned to art-making in her forties, pursuing a long-term interest in textiles. Her work has developed in tandem with the art quilt movement, but she is one of the few artists exploring the sculptural, as opposed to painterly, qualities of the quilt medium. Her sculpture has been widely exhibited and collected, and she teaches her 3-D sewing techniques at fiber guilds, art centers, and museums across the country and abroad.
