The Art of Parenting: Why Kids Need Nature

From Sun, Mar 02, 2014 2:00 pm until Sun, Mar 02, 2014 4:00 pm Save to calendar

At Crocker Art Museum 216 O Street , 95814 , Sacramento , California , USA

Building upon research presented by author Richard Louv in his book Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder, Professor Shawna Martinez will highlight studies showing that spending time in nature fosters creativity, stimulates imagination, and calms children struggling with affective disorders and information overload. Conversely, a lack of routine contact with nature may result in stunted academic and developmental growth, including attention problems, obesity, anxiety, and depression.

Learn about free and low-cost outdoor family fun from local organizations such as: Effie Yeaw Nature Center, Friends of the River Banks, Camp Sacramento, Placer Nature Center, Golden Valley Charter School's Outdoor Kindergarten, and additional organizations.

About the presenter:
Shawna Martinez is a Biological Sciences Professor at Sierra College in Rocklin, where she has taught for 28 years and was recently named "Faculty of the Year," a prestigious award given by the Associated Students of Sierra College. She also leads natural history field trips through the college and is a volunteer for the Sierra College Natural History Museum.

Professor Martinez recognizes that critical thinking begins with an early outdoor education and early exposure to the arts in order to use our creative side to think of new possibilities - this includes being able to envision a world in which we are stewards of the land that we share with 1.7 million other unique species.
